In early 2016 it looked like a shortage of funds would prevent the annual Carnival taking place. The Carnival had a feature in the town for many years.
Dawlish Town Council was very reluctant to lose it as it could not directly run the event, it was decided that a new community group should be formed. With Trevor Stratford as Chairman, a Planning Team grew from a wide range of community groups and worked immensely hard to develop the first Dawlish Celebrates Carnival week from 12-19th August 2016.
The Planning Team became know as ‘The Pink Army’ as they wore pink T-shirts throughout the fantastic event packed week. The week received not only unprecedented support from the Town Council, but also from Teignmouth and Dawlish CIC and the many businesses who sponsored events. It was a community effort with special thanks also to the Dawlish Air Show committee for their support and help in making it possible for the Red Arrows to perform before the Carnival Parade.
The event went so well it was decided to form Dawlish Celebrates Carnival as a Community Interest Company and to do it all again in 2017!
2017 was even more successful!! We added some new features such as a Glow Show and a Beach Day!
2018 was Dawlish’s 50th consecutive carnival and we were proud to be carrying on this tradition in the footsteps of everyone who has run it before!
2019 was rather wet at times but a fab carnival! Who can forget Baby shark??
2020 unfortunately has had to be cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. We have some small scale events but not our usual big events – but don’t worry we will be back in 2021!!
2022 – here we come!!!
